Training courses

The library offers the following standard training packages to all staff at the North Middlesex Hospital:

1. Introduction to Library services

The aim of this course is to help you make the most of our library service.
By the end of the course you will:

  • Have a library and OpenAthens account
  • Know the layout of the library
  • Be able to use our library catalogue, and how to request and renew books
  • Be able to send documents to print
  • How to request books or articles that we do not hold
  • Be aware of other services we offer.

2. Searching healthcare databases

This course is aimed at staff who wish to conduct a literature search. You will be shown the different databases available to search, how to conduct a search, and how to save or print the results.
By the end of the course you will:

  • Be able to search medical databases including NHS Evidence, Medline, CINAHL, and others (the databases covered will depend on your own interests, eg nursing, medcial, pharmaceutical, etc)
  • How to save and print relevant journal articles
  • Be able to set up alerts and save search strategies.

3. Searching Cochrane and TRIP

This course looks at two more specialised databases. The Cochrane Library contain high quality evidence to inform healthcare decision-making. It includes reliable evidence such as systematic reviews, clinical trials, and more. TRIP is a clinical search engine designed to allow users to quickly and easily find high quality research evidence to support clinical practice.
By the end of this course you will know how to:

  • plan your search using PICO
  • navigate and search these databases
  • search for high quality evidence including systematic reviews and randomised controlled trials
